The Unclaimed

“The Unclaimed” is a short, original King Toledo documentary, directed by Jason Cooper & Jay Armitage.

The film tells the story of Eric Arseneaux, a homeless man dying of late-stage stomach cancer on the streets of LA. The film follows Eric’s last few months as he contemplates his impending death, and considers how - and if - to reconnect with his estranged family.

Eric’s experience is tied to Los Angeles County’s annual “Ceremony of the Unclaimed Dead.” During this unique event, the remains of over 1,500 people - many of them homeless - are interred in a common grave. A small, public graveside ceremony is held to honor the dead.

The film premiered at the San Francisco Documentary Film Fest, and has since screened at major festivals including DOCUWEST and New Filmmakers.
